David Fogel Interviews Composer, Engineer, Educator Steve Horowitz
Critically acclaimed as one of the foremost figures in the field, composer Steve Horowitz is the founder of the Game Audio Institute (GAI), current chair of the Interactive Audio Special Interest Group (IASIG) and faculty in the music composition program at San Francisco State University.
As a longtime Audio Director at Nickelodeon/Paramount, Horowitz has scored hundreds of beloved video games, earning Webby, Kid Screen, and BDA awards. He is widely recognized for his original score to the Academy Award–nominated film Super Size Me, and his compositions have also been featured in television series such as I Bet You Will and Casino Cinema for MTV Networks.
In 1996, Horowitz was honored with a GRAMMY Award for his engineering work on the album True Life Blues: The Songs of Bill Monroe. Beyond his contributions to film, television, video games, and dance, he maintains a robust catalog of chamber and concert music.
Horowitz is also the author of two influential books: The Essential Guide to Game Audio: The Theory and Practice of Sound for Games (Focal Press) and The Theory and Practice of Music for Games, published by Rutledge in January 2024.
