Johanna Telander
Johanna Telander is a Finnish-American composer, singer-songwriter, and recording artist whose work bridges Nordic folk traditions, contemporary classical textures, and cinematic storytelling, spanning expansive orchestral writing and intimate, harp-driven chamber pop.
She is the creator of Kalevala: The Musical, an internationally acclaimed reimagining of Finland’s national epic, and her latest album, Tales of Les Dames Blanches, a haunting concept album for an original, mostly sung-through musical inspired by the enduring folklore of 12 women in white, who each carry a fragment of a woman’s soul and must come together to reclaim the power they lost to history.
Her multidisciplinary career encompasses theatre, film, and media, with performances at the United Nations and Lincoln Center, as well as an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon alongside Residente and Bad Bunny.
A published poet with two collections, Johanna’s work also appears on Grammy-winning jazz vocalist Nicole Zuraitis’ album The Devil I Knew. As a composer and creative producer, she continues to explore the meeting of musical traditions, myth, poetry, and contemporary storytelling.
Through her work with organizations such as Nordic Artists of New York and Diamonds in the North, a platform celebrating female expat songwriters from Finland, she fosters artistic collaboration, champions women in music, and supported by the Recording Academy, also advocates for greater community to support for parents navigating careers in the arts.
